Understanding The Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor muscle is comprised of two types of muscles, slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers. Slow twitch muscle fibers are specialized for continuous extended contractions. They use energy more efficiently and can go longer without tiring. Slow twitch muscles are good in this instance for holding up organs and holding urine in the bladder. Marathon athletes focus training these types of muscles. Fast twitch muscle fibers fire more rapidly, but fatigue faster. They are used when you need short bursts of energy and speed. Coughing, laughing, sneezing are examples of fast twitch muscles actions.

When your pelvic floor muscles weaken, several symptoms can appear such as depending on the type of weakened muscles.
  • Stress Incontinence - Strong and forceful actions such as coughing puts too much pressure on the bladder and causes leaking.
  • Urge incontinence - Being unable to hold the urine after feeling the urge to urinate.
  • Mixed Incontinence - Both stress and urge incontinence.
  • Pelvic organ prolapse - When the muscles supporting the pelvic organs weaken allowing the organs to slip out of place.
The Pelvic Floor Muscle Trainer was designed to exercise both types of muscle fibers by training you to do kegel exercises properly. An estimated half of women do not perform the exercises properly. Only by training and making the muscles stronger will you see improved results. Using diapers or pads only treats symptoms, but does not stop the continuing weakening of the muscles.

Exercising the Muscles

Exercising the pelvic floor muscles is recommended by many doctors. Among the benefits are:
  • Increased vaginal grip strength and elasticity
  • Increased natural lubrication
  • Improved incontinence
  • Increased sexual feeling and pleasure
The technology behind the XFT trainer is the pneumatic sensor. The sensor is inside a soft medical grade silicone balloon.

To use the XFT trainer, the inflatable sensor is inserted into the vagina. The device will voice prompt you in each step of the way to calibrate your exercise level.
In the first step, you pump the yellow button on the device to inflate the sensor. The device will then go to the second "Contraction" step. As you contract for 10 seconds, the device will measure the contraction strength.

This contraction test is done 5 times to obtain an accurate measurement. Your exercise level is then displayed and stored for training mode. Once in training mode, the device will guide you through two types of exercises. The slow exercises consists of 10 second contractions and 10 seconds of relaxation. The fast exercise consists of 1 second contractions and 1 seconds of relaxation. With consistent training, the muscles will get stronger and tighter, and ultimately you will have a better quality of life.
